Dr. Darnell Smith
Dr. Darnell B. Smith, 64, of Columbus, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, May 17th, 2016, at home surrounded by loved ones.

Graveside service will be held at the Shelton Cemetery, Shelton, Nebraska, on May 27th at 2:00 PM.

Darnell Bradley Smith was born February 3, 1952, at Kearney, Nebraska, to Emma (Burchell) and Victor Smith. Darnell was raised on a small farm outside of Shelton, Nebraska. Darnell had a deep drive to learn more of the world around him. As a boy he would read the World Book Encyclopedia for hours. He attended school at Denman, Nebraska, through 8th grade. He graduated from Shelton High School in1970 and was awarded the region scholarship to attend Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska.

He returned to Shelton to help with the family farm and work with his brother Kirk’s construction company. He graduated from the University of Nebraska Kearney in 1987 and in 1992 received his doctorate degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

He was employed by Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, from 1992 until he retired. Darnell worked on many projects including the agriculture bill passed by congress, and World Hunger Projects, which required him to travel to numerous countries.

After retirement he moved to Columbus, where he became a caretaker for a young man with Down Syndrome and found this to be his most rewarding time.

Darnell is survived by two sons, Cory Smith (Robin) of Washington, and Casey Smith of Iowa. One brother, Vaughn (Cathy) Smith of Arkansas, two sisters, Josephine (Bob) Britton of Arizona and Verene (Dave) Bilbery of Washington. He is preceded in death by his mother, Emma Smith, father Victor Smith, brother Kirk Smith and infant grandchild Kyle Smith (son of Cory).
